Waltham - Wilbur Thomas Batson, 79, died Monday March 21, 2011 in Lexington, Massachusetts from complications related to Parkinson Disease.
He leaves his wife of 25 years Barbara (Hughes) Batson, his stepdaughters Lindsley Sheppard, Sarah Rafferty and her husband James, and Dr. Margaret Sandin and her spouse Kristen Bjork and nine grandchildren. His brothers Edward of Clearwater, Florida and John of Souderton, Pennsylvania, as well as many cousins, nephews and nieces also survive him. He was predeceased by his first wife Helen (Dolan) Batson.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, the son of Wilbur and Eleanor (Kurz) Batson, Will resided in the Philadelphia area for 67 years before retiring to Hilton Head, South Carolina. He moved to Waltham, Massachusetts in 2009 to be closer to his daughters and grandchildren.
In his early years, Will worked at a hardware store and a music store in Center City Philadelphia to save money for his education. After graduating from Northeast High School in 1950, he attended Temple University from which he earned a bachelor’s degree in Finance and Accounting.
Will was employed by Kurz-Hastings Corporation (formerly Hastings Corporation) for nearly thirty years, rising to Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, a position he held until his retirement in 1999.
Will enjoyed Jazz music throughout his life. He played the saxophone with Freddy Bell and the Bellboys during summers in Wildwood, New Jersey and performed with the Ferko String Band in the Philadelphia Mummers Parade. Will was an avid golfer and longtime member of Manufacturer’s Golf & Country Club in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. He was a world traveler, taking many trips to Europe and a six-week trip around the world following his retirement. He combined his passion for golf and travel by playing on many of the premier golf courses around the world.
A private memorial service will be held to celebrate Will’s life on Sunday, May 29, 2011 in Waltham, Massachusetts.
