William R. Martin

Waltham – Mr. William R. Martin, Jr., of Waltham, died Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at his home. He was 84. Bill was born in New Bedford on September 27, 1925, a son of the late William R. and Winifred (Shay) Martin and was raised in Belmont where he graduated from the local high school. After that he earned a bachelors degree from Massachusetts Maritime Academy and served with the United States Merchant Marine and the United States Navy during World War II. After the war Bill went back to school, this time earning a B.A. degree from Tufts University. In 1978 he received a master’s degree in accounting from Bentley College. Until his retirement he worked as an accountant for New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. He had been a Waltham resident since 1960. He leaves his wife of 51 years, Bernice K. (Kelley) Martin; his children, William R. Martin and his wife, Maureen O’Leary, of Boston, Anne Marie Tracy and her husband, Mark, of Burlington and Donal F. Martin and his wife, Sandy, of Denver, Colorado; his grandchildren, Mark and Katherine Tracy and Cassidy Martin and many nieces and nephews. Bill was also a brother of the late Robert N. Martin. Family and friends will honor and remember Bill’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham. Memorial donations may be made to the Friends of Waltham High Hockey, In Memory of Rick Martin, c/o of Waltham High School, 617 Lexington Street, Waltham, MA 02452.
