Newton – Mr. William J. McMullen, of Newton and formerly of Needham, died peacefully on Monday, December 2, 2013 after a long illness. He was 64.
Bill was born in Newton on January 27, 1949, the son of the late William and Alice (Joyce) McMullen. He graduated from Newton High School in 1968 and studied masonry at Wentworth Institute, working as a mason for a number of years before becoming a police officer at Boston College. In 1981, Bill was appointed to the Natick Fire Department. While on the department he worked as an EMT, a job he found rewarding. He loved to golf and spend time in both Cape Cod and Orlando.
Bill is survived by his children, Marc McMullen of Needham and Lesley Fier and her husband, David, of Staten Island, New York; his sister, Sr. Joyce McMullen, S.N.D. of Dorchester and also leaves his former spouse, Lois McMullen, of Needham and many cousins and close friends.
He was also the brother of the late Martha McMullen.
Family and friends will honor and remember Bill's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte.20), Waltham on Wednesday, December 4th from 4 to 8 and again at 8:45 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Bernard's Church, 1523 Washington Street, Newton, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
