Mr. William R. O’Mara, of Waltham, died unexpectedly on Saturday, February 10, 2024. Bill was born September 9, 1947 in Waltham, a son of the late Daniel and Helena (Richard) O’Mara. He was a graduate of Waltham High School with the class of 1965 where he was a talented athlete. He married Martha J. Fahey on November 20, 1971. He worked for more than 40 years for the Town of Weston.
Bill, a man of quick wit, a clever sense of humor, and an infectious laugh wasn't just the best husband, father, and Grampie; he was a true Renaissance man - there wasn't a trivia question he couldn't answer. While his love for family and friends was foremost in his life, his talents extended to being an exceptional baker and an avid reader. Onset, Jackson NH, Waitsfield VT, and Ireland were the backdrops to some of his most cherished stories, always told with a twinkle in his eye. Whether hiking, swimming in the Mad River, or perfecting his golf swing in the backyard, Bill found joy in life's simple pleasures. The love and warmth he brought to those around him made "Billy" beloved by all who were fortunate enough to know him. His passing leaves a devastating void in the hearts of his family and friends, both here and in Ireland.
In addition to his wife of 52 years, Martha, he leaves his children, Jeremy M. O’Mara (Kerrie) of Framingham, Megan A. Denis (Louis) of Concord, Brigid T. Loureiro (Stephen) of Acton and Deirdre A. Gent (Ross) of Baltimore, Maryland; his grandchildren, Molly, Quinn, Owen, Liam, Conor, Maeve, Aidan, Alice, Nora, Fiona and the late Anna; his siblings, Paul O’Mara (late Eileen) of Wayland, Judith O’Mara (late Dolores Paradise) of Brockton and the late Daniel and James O’Mara; his in-laws, Carol O’Mara of Port Washington, Wisconsin, Michael Fahey (Ann) of Arlington, Joseph Fahey (Carol), Janis Daniels (Andrew) all of Waltham, James Fahey, John Fahey (Lynn) and MaryAlice Poirier (Jean Guy), all of Belmont; also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Bill’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday, February 18th from 2 to 5 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. Monday before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, where his funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial is private.
