Dr. Yamil H. Kourí, M.D. of Waltham, formerly of Newton, died Saturday, August 20, 2022 at home after an illness. He was 84.
Born on October 4, 1937 in Manzanillo, Cuba, he was the son of the late Emilio Harón and Gloria Pérez. He married Elena del Pino on December 20, 1959 in Havana, Cuba. They settled in Puerto Rico in 1979 before moving to Newton in 1985 and lastly, Waltham in 2000.
He earned an MD from the University of Havana and an MPH and PhD in Public Health from Harvard University. He was one of Harvard's Commencement speakers in 1986. A lifelong philatelist and collector, he loved to travel and did so widely over many decades.
In addition to his wife of 62 years, Elena del Pino, he leaves his children, Yamil H. Kourí (Suzanne) of Lexington, Emilio H. Kourí (Brodie) of Chicago, Juan H. Kourí of Miami, Florida and Elena M. Driscoll (Thomas) of Boston; his fourteen grandchildren, Cristy, Ana, Laura, Susana and Yamil Kourí; Sofía and Lucía Kourí; Isabella, Nicole, Camila and Emilia Kourí; Thomas, Andrés and Monica Driscoll; his sister, Gloria Ibarra–Santana of Mansfield; niece & nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Yamil's life by gathering for a calling hour on Saturday, September 17th at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham, followed by his Funeral Mass celebrated at 11 a.m. A private burial will follow in Newton Cemetery, Newton.
