On March 5th, 2022, Dr. Zhenxi Zhang died in Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Massachusetts, of cancer. He was 85 years old.
Zhang is survived by his wife Wende of Waltham, MA; his children Zhen and Jun; son in-law, Coomar; grandchild, Jonathan; and sibling Cailan.
Zhang was born in China. He graduated from Beijing Medical University in Beijing, China in 1959. He earned a Doctor of Medicine. After graduating, Zhang took a job at Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and started his virologist and vaccinologist career.
He went on to study at University of Louvain, Belgium (1978). He continued his advanced studies and worked at University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill (1986-1988). He had worked on projects at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID). He worked at other biotechnology companies and retired from Acambis (acquired by Sanofi Pasteur).
In his career, he contributed to new drug research and development.
After college, his goal was to make greater contributions to the development of health, science and technology. He exceeded the target.
He loved traveling, classic music, and reading history.
A private visitation is planned. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to MASS General fund.
